2023 Hair, Skincare, Nail, and Makeup Trends

If you’re looking for a way to switch it up in the new year, look no further! The AIB 2023 beauty trends list is here. We took a deep dive into the latest trends that we’ll be seeing grace the runways, magazines, and of course TikTok, over the next year. If we had to summarize it in a few words we’d say get ready for bold, edgy, yet minimalist at the same time. There’s a little something for everyone on this list and self-expression will reign supreme!

Hair Trends

Hair Cuts

Layers/Face Framing

2023 is all about the layers! A great way to add dimension to your hair. You can definitely play with different types of cuts here. Maybe you’re looking for a butterfly cut, with shorter face framing layers which gives the illusion of shorter hair with longer layers sitting below the shoulders. Or maybe you’d rather go with an octopus cut. This is similar to the butterfly layering but has a more shag-like appearance to it, with a sharper, less feathery finish. To grunge or not to grunge is the question!

Butterfly Haircut

Octopus Haircut

The Box Bob

If you’re looking for a change from your long locks, the box bob may be for you! Bobs never go out of style, they only evolve. This cut is a great way to add texture to fine hair because it is blunt and choppy, with length stopping at the chin.

Short ‘fro

Don’t be deceived by the name, this cut still has plenty of styling options available! Continuing into 2023, it’s all about emphasizing your natural texture, while also being able to mix it up. This length allows the hair to be styled into finger waves or have a deep side part added for those sleek and chic days.

Hairstyles

Side Part

Can we even keep up with which side our hair is supposed to be parted on nowadays? For all of you that could not stand the center part look, rejoice! Side parts are back “in”, especially deep side parts. Pair your side part with big voluminous curls or a sleek straight look, either way you’re on trend this year.

Ponytails

Braided, sleek, we’ll take them all! This hairstyle is fantastic because it usually takes minimal effort and is extremely versatile. A practical and chic way to get your hair out of your face while still being on trend. Want to add a little sparkle to your ‘do? Bedazzling is back in. I repeat, bedazzling is back in!

Hair Color

Strawberry Blonde

We saw wild popularity on copper tones last year. In 2023, we will see strawberry blonde take over, which is a great way to fade out the red and copper into a lighter honey-toned color for spring and summer.

Beige Blonde

Looking for a cooler-toned effortless looking blonde? Here it is! For a more lived in look, go with this sandy beige blonde and add in some lighter highlights throughout. This gives the color a more natural look while still feeding your urge for blonde.

Cinnamon

Don’t worry, those red tones aren’t going anywhere! If you’re looking for something on the darker side, try out this mix between red and brunette. An easy way to wade into a more subtle tone, without jumping headfirst into bright red or copper. Spice up your brunette ‘do with this color!

Pastel Rose Peach

This is another fantastic way to fade out those red and copper tones, cue pastel rose peach. If you’re looking for a fun hair color, this might be for you! A spin off of the popular rose gold, this look will get you ready for summer in an instant.

Skin Trends

Barrier Repair and Hydration

We are becoming more aware of the concept that certain ingredients are not friendly to the microbiome, such as alcohol and benzoyl peroxide, which are extremely drying to the skin. That’s where skin cycling, and “slugging” enter the chat. If you haven’t heard these terms before, don’t worry, you definitely will! Skin cycling is the concept of personalizing your routine to what your skin can handle. Instead of using exfoliants and retinoids multiple times a week, dial it back if your skin is super sensitive. This works the opposite direction too though, if your skin can handle these products, feel free to increase use. Add in a “recovery” night where simple products are used to give your skin a break. It’s all about tailoring your skincare routine to what YOUR skin can handle. “Slugging” or “skin flooding” on the other hand, is the process of adding a top layer of product over your serums and creams, typically something glycerin-related, in order to lock in hydration.

Peptide Lip Treatments

Peptide lip treatments have become extremely popular, and this will continue in 2023. It is a restorative way to create a soft and plump lip while decreasing the appearance of fine lines.

Chebula Serum

Another huge trend that we’ll see continuing is the advent of products that include Chebula. This is an anti-ageing ingredient that is high in antioxidants that works to moisturize, brighten, and strengthen the skin.

Mushroom Based Ingredients

You will see mushroom-based skincare products becoming more popular throughout the year as they are a great natural alternative for hyaluronic acid, an ingredient that in itself has become widely used to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Tremella mushroom will become all the rage in 2023 due to its humectant properties, meaning it attracts moisture and follows suit with our need to repair our skin’s barrier. Products that contain mushrooms are great for sensitive skin and have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Nail Trends

3D Art

Let your imagination run wild with this one! There are a ton of different 3D nail trends to choose from using nail jewels, chains, studs, stickers, or hard gel to create it. This year is all about dimension and texture.

Airbrush

Playing on all things that feel “Y2K” expect to see the airbrush trend continue into 2023. This can be done with a rainbow of color or more muted tones, depending on your style. The look is done by swirling the colors together to create a blended design. Get creative!

Chrome

Chrome has been popular for a few years now, but in 2023 we will see the resurgence of all over chrome. From the icy metallic silvers to the pops of color like pink, you can’t go wrong with a chrome set!

Aura

We love how versatile this design is! Featuring a circular ombre effect that looks similar to a glowing aura, there are plenty of color options to choose from to achieve it! Think of colors that give an energy vibe to them or symbolize the body’s chakras.

Makeup Trends

Grunge Glam

We have seen the surge of all things grunge over the past year, and 2023 will be no different. Think heavy eyeliners and deeper lipstick colors. Take your inspo from Wednesday Addams herself!

Clean Girl

In stark contrast to the grunge trend, the clean aesthetic will also continue into 2023. For those that enjoy skincare, this is your time! We are seeing a surge in the popularity of skin-nourishing makeup formulas that leave us with a glossy complexion rather than the matte look of years past. Go for a low-maintenance natural look here and you’re good to go!

Bold Eyeshadow

Step out of your comfort zone and into bold colors, especially pink, blue, and green tones. Liquid eyeshadows, we’re looking at you. The more vibrant the color, the better. We saw the popularity of graphic eyeliner last year, and this year we’re taking it a step further!
