A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Barber in Florida

Becoming a Barber in Florida

Becoming a barber in Florida can be a fulfilling and rewarding career choice. Barbers play a significant role in helping individuals look and feel their best. To embark on this exciting journey, aspiring barbers must follow a set of steps and meet certain requirements. This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to become a licensed barber in the state of Florida.

Step 1: Meet the Minimum Requirements

Before you can start your barbering journey in Florida, you must meet the minimum requirements to enroll in barbering school. This includes being at least 16 years old and having a high school diploma or equivalent (don’t have a high school diploma or equivalent? Give AIB a call).

Step 2: Enroll in a Barbering Program

To become a licensed Barber in the state of Florida, you will first need to find a barber school, such as American Institute of Beauty (AIB), and meet the requirements to enroll. After enrollment, you’re ready to start the Barbering/Hair Design program, which is offered at the St. Pete, FL campus. It’s essential to choose a reputable school that is approved by the Florida Board of Cosmetology.

AIB offers a comprehensive training program that covers various aspects of barbering, including hair cutting techniques, hair design, sanitation practices, and customer service skills.

Step 3: Complete the Required Training Hours

At AIB, the barbering/hair design program is 1,200 clock hours. During those hours students can learn both the hands-on and theoretical elements of the trade that could make them a well-educated professional. Students can learn the art and science of barbering, honing their skills under the supervision of licensed, experienced educators.

In AIB’s Barbering/Hair Design program you could learn:

  • Hair cutting, design, styling
  • Men’s hair coloring/lightening
  • Chemical texture services (perms, relaxers, etc.)
  • Straight razor shaving
  • Facial shaving & grooming design
  • Men’s hair replacement
  • Facials
  • And more!

The Barbering/Hair Design program at American Institute of Beauty can be completed in as little as 9 months*! We offer full-time/part-time day and part-time evening classes for ease and schedule flexibility.

Step 4: Pass the State Board Exam

After completing the Barbering/Hair Design program, you must pass the Florida State Board exam to obtain your barber license. The exam consists of both written and practical components, assessing your theoretical knowledge and practical skills. AIB’s goal is to prepare students to take the state board exam through teaching the foundational and theoretical principles behind hair care, coupled with real-world guest experiences in the student salon.

Step 5: Obtain Your Barber License

Once you successfully pass the State Board exam, you can apply for your barber license through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Ensure that you submit all necessary documents and fees to expedite the licensing process. Once licensed, you can legally practice barbering in the state of Florida.

Step 6: Pursue Continuing Education

Barbers in Florida are required to renew their licenses every two years. As part of the renewal process, barbers must complete continuing education hours to stay updated with the latest trends, techniques, and safety protocols in the industry. Continuing education ensures that you maintain high standards of professionalism throughout your career.

Rewarding Journey

Becoming a barber in Florida is a rewarding journey that begins with proper education, training, and dedication.
