Fighting Hunger – How The Beauty Industry Can Help

As the holiday season rolls around, all of us in the beauty industry are looking for ways to help those in need. Many of us have been blessed to never go without a hot meal on the table during the holidays. However, for the less fortunate, this may not always be the case. Here are a few ways we can all help fight hunger in our communities.

Hold a Food Drive

Organizing a food drive can have a huge impact on helping the hungry. Those in the beauty industry with a strong social media presence can help spread the word about the drive and advertise ways for people to donate. Although you should accept most non-perishable food items, also stress the importance of donating healthy food items. Many of those who rely on pantries will have medical conditions that place restrictions on what they’re permitted to eat. Choose a convenient place for food drop-offs, such as in the waiting room of your salon. Another option to drum up donations for your food drive is to advertise discounts for all customers who donate money or food in support of the drive.

Send Money

Since charitable organizations typically buy their food items in bulk, every dollar you send them will go a long way toward feeding the hungry. Consider choosing a day at work where you will donate your tips to a food bank. Advertise your contribution to clients to encourage their own generosity. You could also host a cut-a-thon at your salon to collect monies for charity. During this type of event, all haircuts are discounted with the fees going directly to support a charity.

Donate Time

Not everyone has extra money to donate to food banks. However, many local food pantries and soup kitchens will always welcome those looking to volunteer. You can volunteer to deliver meals to the elderly or sick, offer to help serve meals at shelters, or donate your time to handle any administrative tasks required by the organization.

Fighting Hunger – Even as a Student

As a part of the student body at the American Institute of Beauty, you’ll be able to help out with the many charitable events sponsored by the beauty school. A select few of the ways that the school gives back are through food drives such as their Annual Cut Out Hunger Food Drive in November each year.
