When you work as a beauty or barber professional, one of the most important aspects of your job is helping people look and feel like the best versions of themselves. This becomes especially important during the holiday season, when people are preparing for family gatherings and other special events where they truly want to feel confident. And in the spirit of giving, now is a great time to reflect on how fortunate you are to have a great career and explore ways to help give back to others who may not be as lucky.
Participate in a “Cut-a-Thon”
Throughout the year (and especially around the holidays), many hair and beauty salons will either participate in or host their own “cut-a-thons.” During these events, beauty and barber professionals give out free hair cuts, shaves, and other beauty services to those in attendance. This can be a great way to help somebody feel great about themselves who may otherwise not be able to afford a hair cut or similar service. Consider looking into local “cut-a-thons” where you could volunteer, or see about hosting one at your own place of employment!
Speak With Current Students
This time of year can be especially challenging for students, especially if assignment deadlines and exams loom dangerously close to the holidays. At this point, at the end of the year, many students find themselves feeling at least a little burnt out and in need of some motivation. You could help by volunteering to give a “success talk” to current enrolled students. During this talk, you can share your own knowledge and tips for success, as well as give students some insight as to what they have to look forward to in their future careers.
Run a Canned Food Drive
Finally, think about the many people this time of year who have a hard time putting food on the table. To combat area hunger, you may want to consider starting a canned food drive at your place of employment. For example, we recently held a canned food drive where anybody who brought in three canned goods received a free haircut. This ended up being a great way to give back to the community in more than one way!
These are just a few examples of steps you can take to put your skill set to use and give back to the community this season.
