Top 5 Tips To Become a Great Hair Stylist
You are attending school, stretching the skills you have learned in theory to practical experience with beauty school clients, and you are dreaming about your future. Here are the top 5 tips to become a great hair stylist to help guide you along.
1. Believe In Yourself.
People will tell you you can’t do something and try to bring you down. Rule number 1 is not to listen to them. Believe in yourself and go for it. In a Forbes interview with Celebrity Stylist Sally Hershberger, she says people told her she couldn’t work for a famous hair stylist, that she was too young and inexperienced. She went in and they gave her a shot. She went on to become the Celebrity Stylist we know her to be today.
2. Use Social Media To Show Off Your Work.
A good way to grow your client list is to show off the great work that you do. Talk to your clients and ask them if you can take before and after photos. Then post them on social media and ask them, if they loved your work, to please leave a comment about it on your post. Your clients know you are working towards your new career and most will be happy to help you along.
3. Keep Your Passion.
The facts that your reading this article means that you are passionate about your new career. Tip number three is to keep that passion. You’re a visual person, use a picture or some tangible object to keep you motivated. Whether this is a photo of someone you admire, a gift your grandmother gave you, or a famous quote that motivates you, place the object somewhere where you see it each and every day. Don’t ever forget why you are pursuing your dreams.
4. Be A Team Player.
A good trait in any career is the ability to make connections, but as a stylist it is even more important. Your connections are your future clients, employers, and fans. Make sure you practice working as a team player now. Take the extra step to help someone else, introducing yourself to someone new, volunteer to be part of a group to help others. You never know when a new connection will turn into a great opportunity.
5. Continue Learning.
It is important to attend trade shows, classes, and product demonstrations. There is always a new method or a current style that your client will want, or look great wearing. As a student, right now, your education is fresh and you know the current trends, but will you in 5 years? Schedule at least one trade show, class, and demonstration per year.
Congratulations, you are on your way to becoming a great stylist! Now Enjoy!
