Why Are Cosmetologists in High Demand?

Do you spend a lot of free time looking up hair tutorials online or experimenting with hair color? What if we told you that you could take that passion and turn it into an exciting career? Overall employment of barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists is projected to grow 19% from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. Over the next 10 years, the career outlook for those interested in becoming a barber, cosmetologist, or hairstylist is much higher than the national average growth rate of 8% in all industries.

At American Institute of Beauty, we provide an education that prepares our students to enter the beauty industry. Check out four reasons why Cosmetologists are in such high demand below!

Beauty is Always in

It’s no secret that beauty has always been of major importance to our society. Trends come and go just the same as decades do. Although beauty standards have changed with time, they have never disappeared. This means the beauty industry will forever be growing and changing. New skills and techniques are crafted each year along with new products and styles. The Beauty Industry is expected to grow annually by 4.76% and is projected to globally bring in $564 billion in revenue for 2022, with the most revenue being generated in the United States (approx. $87 billion).

Education Shift

Many people have been taught from a young age that one of the only ways to become successful is to start by attending college and receiving a 4-year degree. Although this may have been true in the past, many shifts have happened over time. Specifically, since the COVID-19 pandemic started, people have been more inclined to seek career opportunities that require less of an educational time commitment and more affordability, that way they can get out into the job market quickly.

That’s what makes Beauty, Barbering, and Skin Care schools extremely enticing. For example, at American Institute of Beauty, we offer programs ranging from 9 weeks to 12 months long, depending on the program and schedule selected. That means any of our programs can be completed in less time than an Associates degree!

Versatility of the License

Typically, when people think of Cosmetology or Cosmetologists, they think about someone who cuts or colors hair only. However, the Cosmetology profession entails much more than just hair, and offers a plethora of unique career opportunities that you may not have thought about! In AIB’s Cosmetology program, students learn skills related to hair, skin, and nails. That means the field of Cosmetology isn’t limited to a career behind the salon chair. You could decide to focus on skin or nails and become an Esthetician or Nail Artist. Maybe you complete our Bella Lash Eyelash Extension certification, and you want to be a Lash Artist. The world of Cosmetology careers is vast! Take a look at some of the unusual opportunities you could pursue with a Cosmetology license:

• Platform Artist such as with Redken
• Wig/Hair Piece Creator
• Hair Extension Specialist
• Editorial/Advertising Stylist
• Artistic Director for a Salon or Brand
• Stylist for Film and Theater
• Fashion Show Stylist
• Cosmetology Educator
• Beauty Blogger/Influencer
• Mortician Cosmetologist

Success is in Your Hands

One of the major advantages to becoming a licensed Cosmetologist, or working in the beauty industry in general, is that success truly is in your hands. There are plenty of opportunities to gain experience and different certifications to strengthen your skillsets. You may also be interested in opening your own Salon/Spa or becoming an Independent Hairstylist where you rent the booth for your business but have the ability to build your own clientele, schedule, and pricing. This way you are not working under anyone and would have control over your brand and business. Success comes from dedication and hard work. If you have a true passion for the beauty industry and the motivation to put in the effort, you too can become very successful!
